Hitting the 3-5 Irons Too Low

Visit Swing Man Golf  for longer drives and to

If you’re like most people, you probably have trouble getting your 3-5 irons up in
the air…and there may not be much, if any, of a difference in distance gap
between them for you. Personally, I think that one of the big reasons this is a
problem for many amateurs is that the golf instruction world is telling them they
need to have the same club position at impact as a professional – where the
hands are ahead of the club head.
This hand position is fine for the pro who has a 115 mph driver swing speed and
can still hit a 3-iron high up in the air this way. Not to mention, this position helps
their short irons too because it brings them down out of the wind and they can
control their distances better. However, for a typical amateur with a lower swing
speed, this delofted club position causes problems. While it is true, on one hand,
that the ball will go farther for their short irons, it causes their 3-5 irons to come
out at too low of a launch angle to maximize the club’s distance.
So if this sounds like you or one of your playing partners, here are a few options
to help:
1) Train to increase your swing speed with your current swing so that you have
enough speed to get the longer irons up in the air.
2) Try to not arrive so far hands forward, let the club catch up a little more. This
would add height to all of your shots and you could hold more greens. Be aware
that it might also take some distance off your short irons because they’d be going
higher, but at least you’d have consistent gaps between all clubs and the long
irons would be more usable.
3) Investigate some hybrids as replacements for the long irons that have weight
towards the bottom of the club to help get the ball up in the air a little more.

speed and improve your iron game.
Have a great day!
