How to play golf pitch and chip shots?

How to play golf pitch and chip shots?

It has been said that sixty percent or more of a golf score occurs within 100 yards of the hole.  So, other than putting, golf pitch shots and golf chip shots are the most critical golf shots to achieve a good score in the game.

Below are quick golf tips to successfully set up and execute golf pitch shots and golf chip shots every time you play.

How to Play Golf Pitch Shot

a.) The “golf pitch shot” spends more time in the air than on ground. Use lofted club—sand wedge (54-58°) or lob wedge (59-62°).
b.) Grip the golf club firmer with a golf pitch shot than with a normal golf shot.
c.) When you set up for the golf pitch shot, position your body so that the ball is slightly forward from the middle toward your front foot.
d.) Slightly open your stance with your weight distributed more toward your front foot (about 60% of weight) than your rear foot (about 40% of weight). Keep this weight distribution throughout the golf pitch shot.
e.) Move your hands down the grip and position hands so that they are in front of the golf ball.
f.) Keep steady pace and swing your torso back and through the shot.

How to Play Golf Chip Shot

a.) The “golf chip shot” is used to land the ball onto the green as soon as possible.  It is typically used when the ball is 3 to 6 feet off the green and when putting the ball toward the cup is not a good option.
b.) Position your body so that the ball is back from the middle toward your rear foot.
c.) When setting up for the golf chip shot, slightly open your stance with your weight distributed more toward your front foot (about 60% of weight) than your rear foot (about 40% of weight).  Keep this weight distribution throughout the golf chip shot.
d.) Position hands down on the grip and in front of the golf ball.
e.) Keep a smooth easy, stroke make sure your wrists do not break throughout the golf chip shot.

Advertise Your Own Brand On The Golf Course

Advertise Your Own Brand On The Golf Course

For all of the golfers out there, how many of you work for Taylormade, Titleist, Cleveland, Calloway, or Nike?  I would imagine that only a very tiny percentage of you do so.  Yet, most of us (myself included), actually pay these companies sizeable amounts of money to advertise their brands for them as we spend 4 hours (or significantly more in some cases) on the golf course.  Between the expensive golf bags, hats, shirts, and towels that we purchase, we are a walking billboards for these companies, and we paid them for that right!

With the marketing and business degrees that many golfers probably possess, how many of us have ever stopped to wonder how that makes any sense.  Why not take the money that you spent on that 0 Taylormade cart bag, and buy a bag or shirt that advertises YOUR brand instead.  Use a bag with your logo embroidered on it to start a conversation with your playing partners about the company that you own or sell for.  It’s a natural segue into your ”elevator pitch”.

Let’s take that golf bag with your company’s logo on it and look at it from an advertising point of view.  Those in the advertising world are famliar with the term “impressions”, or the number of times your advertisement or brand message is viewed by a potential customer.  Between leaving it at the bag drop and driving around the course with it, the bag with your logo on it could receive easily 20-30 impressions within 4-5 hours.  If you play several times a month, a custom golf bag that costs about 0 will pay for itself several times over with just the impressions you’ll get with it during the life of the bag.

There are a number of places on the web where you can purchase a custom golf bag, and you can find them if you do a Google search.  Prices range from 0 for a basic stand bag with embroidery on it up to close to ,000 for a high-end custom made leather golf bag. Even though the prices might be a little higher than an off the shelf golf bag, now you’ve become a walking billboard for your OWN company, and better yet, the golf bag becomes a tax deductible business expense.

So the next time you feel the urge to go out and buy the latest Titleist bag, stop yourself and ask “Does this get me the best ROI for my business?”.  Chances are, the answer is no.

Easy Tips For Fixing A Golf Slice

Easy Tips For Fixing A Golf Slice

If you are looking to fix a golf slice, there are a few helpful tips which can get you on the right track.

Adjust your setup, this includes strengthening your grip, fixing your alignment, and making sure your golf ball position is correct.  A stronger grip will help you combat your slice.  Make sure to turn your hands more to the right on the grip so that the two Vs or lines that form between your thumbs and forefingers point up towards your right shoulder.  This is a strong grip.  If the lines between your thumbs and forefingers point up towards your chin, your grip is more neutral.  Making your grip stronger may not completely fix your slice, but it should help reduce it quite a bit.

It is good to be aware of your alignment when you set up to the golf ball.  You want to make sure the line of your feet, hips, shoulders, and even your forearms are all parallel to your target line.  Many times golfers will incorrectly align themselves on the golf course which will cause problems in direction of their golf shots.  The most common error for a slicer is to align too much to the left with their body and feet.  This is a compensation which will actually make your slice worse and you’ll lose a lot of distance.  An open stance will promote being open at impact thus leading to a weak shot without much power.

It can be helpful to work on your alignment on the driving range by putting an alignment stick or club down pointing just parallel left of your target line, in between your golf ball and your feet.  That way, you can make sure your feet are aligned correctly by just making sure they are both the same distance away from the club laying down.  From there, once you have your feet set, just make sure your hips and shoulders are lined up over them.

Playing the golf ball too far forward in your stance can promote a slice but playing it too far back can cause other problems.  The ideal and correct place to play the ball with all your full swing iron shots is 3 quarters of the way up in your stance.  The ball should be halfway between the middle of your stance and your left or front heel.  With your driver, it’s good to play the ball directly in line with your left or front heel.  With fairway woods or hybrids, play the golf ball just slightly back off of your left heel.  When you are chipping or pitching, you’ll want to play the ball back in your stance however as this is a totally different shot with a different objective.

Now, many slicers have a tendency to open up their body too early before they’ve actually hit the golf ball.  The problem with this is opening up the upper body drags the clubface across the golf ball which puts a left to right sidespin on the golf ball.  The left to right sidespin produces a slice or left to right ball flight when it is traveling in the air.  By keeping your back to the target longer on your downswing, you’ll be able to swing the golf club down more easily on the proper swing path and straighten out your shots.  This will produce a more in to out swing path which is simply the opposite path of a golf slice.

What are the different types of golf shots?

What are the different types of golf shots?

Though it sometimes seems that there are dozens of different golf shots that a golfer must learn to be a “good golfer” (e.g., consistently shoot in the 70′s or 80′s), there really are only a critical few golf shots that matter outside of the putting game.  If golfers can master these critical golf shots which can be applied and adapted for just about any golf situation, then they will certainly see a drop in their scores and more consistency in their game.  Below is a listing and description of each of these golf shots and how they are applied around the golf course.

1.Straight Golf Shots: As the name implies, a straight golf shot starts straight and holds the line toward the target.  It is used when the target is straight in front of you and shaping the golf shot right or left is unnecessary.  A straight golf shot is achieved when all the golf fundamentals are executed and synchronized effectively including setup position, grip, swing path and weight transfer.

2.Draw Golf Shots: A draw golf shot is used to curve a shot right to left around an obstacle to the target. The basic fundamentals of straight golf shots are followed, except alignment is right of the target and the grip is rotated in a “stronger” position to encourage right to left ball flight.

3.Fade Golf Shots: A fade golf shot is used to curve a shot left to right around an obstacle to the target. Similar to a draw, the basic fundamentals of straight golf shots are followed, except alignment is left of the target and the grip is rotated in a “weaker” position to encourage left to right ball flight.

4.Fairway Bunker Golf Shots: A fairway bunker golf shot is hit from fairway bunkers adjacent to the fairway. A good fairway bunker shot can position you well for your next shot and help save your score.  On these shots, it is important to position the body so that ball lies in the middle of your stance and stand “taller” throughout the shot to strike the ball cleanly.

5.Greenside Bunker Golf Shots: A greenside bunker golf shot is hit from bunker adjacent or very close to the putting surface. Since loft, rather than distance, is more important on these golf shots, it is important to position the ball forward in the stance while weight is distributed (and kept) favoring the left side throughout the golf shot.

6.Pitch Golf Shots: Pitch golf shot spends more time in the air than on ground and are typically used when 60 yards or more from the putting green.  The setup and weight distribution used for pitch shots are different than for straight, draw and fade golf shots and a lofted club such as a sand wedge or lob wedge is used.

7.Chip Golf Shots: Chip golf shots are typically used when the golf ball is 3 to 6 feet off the green and putting the ball is not a good option.  Chip shots are miniature versions of the full swing where just enough power is applied to land the ball quickly on the surface and roll toward the cup.

Of course, there are several other types of golf shots, but most are just variations of the ones above.  If golfers can focus on mastering these golf shots, then their games are sure to quickly improve.

Buying Your First Set Of Golf Clubs – What Do You Really Need?

Clubbin'

Image by Media Specialist via Flickr

You are a beginning golfer, and it is time to buy your first set of clubs.  Oh my God!  What are we going to do now?

OPTIONS

Actually there are several options.  Don’t go out and buy the most expensive things you have ever seen.  You aren’t ready for that quite yet.  Your game isn’t polished enough for you to really enjoy high performance equipment.

You may consider buying a complete off brand set from driver to pitching wedge either new or used.  The alternative is to buy an off brand set of irons from 3 to pitching wedge and then adding several woods.  You can find these sets at many sporting goods outlets, on line, or even at many used golf equipment stores.

I will discuss the option that forces you to choose additional individual woods.  The complete set leaves nothing further to discuss.  You are going to need a driver, 3 wood and probably a 5 wood.  Some golf writers suggest skipping the driver since most beginning golfers don’t hit a driver very well.

If you want to play golf and you don’t want to swing the “BIG DOG” then what is the point?  Golf is a game of distance and accuracy.  If you are afraid of the driver then play the executive par 3 courses.  You will still hit lots of middle irons and practice putting.

Today’s square backed drivers have a hitting surface as big as a tennis racket and are designed to help beginners keep more balls in play.  3 woods have much smaller faces which give many beginning golfers more frustration off the tee.  Buy an off name square backed driver with a racy looking shaft.

3 woods and 5 woods are designed to hit the ball of the fairway grass.  Like any other club they may be used off the tee on short dog legs or long par 3′s.  Some beginners take a long time to become comfortable with these clubs.

5 woods are also used as rescue clubs to get out of long grass.  Since a 5 wood and a 3 iron travel about the same distance in the air, you may only want to carry one or the other.  Most people could never hit a 3 iron out  of long grass.

Start with a driver and 3 wood.  Add a 5 wood later if you find the 3 iron difficult to hit or if you want the longer rescue club.

PUTTER

Now let’s add a putter.  On tour you see several different grips and three different putter styles.  Players tend to add the belly or even long putter to their bag after they lose confidence in the more standard putter.  In general these long putters are also long on price.

Go to a sporting good outlet that has a practice putting green.  Try several different putters.  Look for a standard putter that allows you to bend over the ball so your eyes are above the ball.  This allows you to see the line and will increase putting accuracy.

Now find a putter that seems to swing effortlessly.  Ideally this putter will have a long back end that helps you align the putter and ball with the hole.  For now use a standard grip.  In time you can try a reverse grip, the claw, or some other grip if you like.

Don’t blow the bank roll on this club either.  An off name putter for a reasonable price will be fine.

WEDGES

There are two other classes of clubs that you will eventually consider adding to your bag:  hybrids and wedges.  Right now lets only consider a sand wedge.

Dave Pells has pointed out that the standard set of irons has nothing to help a golfer score inside of 100 yards.  Listen to the pro tour and several times a day you will hear the announcer say the golfer is laying up to a full club distance.  Pros don’t like getting inside the full swing distance of their shortest club.

You will miss a lot of greens short, wide and long.  You will have a lot of shots well inside 100 yards including sand bunkers.  A sand wedge was made to help get out of bunkers and is a much better short game club than a pitching wedge.  Buy a club in the low to mid 50 degree range that feels comfortable in your hands.

In time you will find that there is a big gap between your pitching wedge and your sand wedge.  When you are ready buy a gap wedge, around 50 degrees will work well.

Finally, when you short game has improved buy a lob wedge, around 60 degrees.  This club will be for very short shots that must land and stop very quickly.  Don’t buy this club too soon, it is difficult for the raw beginning golfer to master.

HYBRIDS

Some people hate fairway woods and prefer long irons and some people hate long irons and prefer woods.  I am definitely in the second group.

3, 4, and 5 irons may be replaced with todays hybrids.  These clubs look, feel, and swing more like a wood than an iron.  Gary Player has said he would have won more tournaments if only he had had these clubs in his prime.

If you hate long irons then find an off brand 3 hybrid.  Take it to the range and compare it to your 3 iron.  If you are pleased then try a 4 and finally a 5.  You should find that hybrids are easier to hit out of long grass.

Eventually I found that I prefer my 5 wood to my 3 hybrid.  This is a choice you will have to make on your own.

These clubs should wait until you have been playing for several weeks or even months.

SHAFTS

Fiber glass is forgiving and steel gives better feel.  The pros love steel, you will use only fiberglass down to at least your pitching wedge.

CONCLUSION

Play with these reasonably priced beginners clubs until you have decided you really are committed to this fine game and until you have solved the majority of your beginner’s swing flaws.  Only when you are ready should you approach your pro or golf shop about fitting top end expensive equipment.  By that time you will also know what optional clubs you like and which you should avoid.
